Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on diagnosing and treating structural irregularities in the teeth, jaw, and facial area. Orthodontic treatment helps guide the dental and jaw development of children, ensuring proper tooth eruption. In adults, it corrects existing structural problems such as jaw misalignment, bite issues, and gaps between teeth.
Orthodontic treatment is commonly recommended for patients with crowded teeth, misalignment, spacing issues, or jaw problems. The process begins with an examination, followed by diagnosis, treatment planning, and bracket–wire selection.
Before starting treatment, patients should consult a qualified and experienced orthodontist. During the initial consultation, the specialist will explain the personalized treatment plan and the stages of braces.

The first step is scheduling an appointment with an orthodontist. During the examination, several diagnostic procedures are performed, including a comprehensive oral evaluation, cephalometric and panoramic X-rays, and facial/ intraoral photographs. After the diagnosis, the orthodontist creates a personalized treatment plan.
Before placing braces, additional treatments such as fillings, tooth extractions, implant procedures, or tartar cleaning may be required to prepare the mouth for orthodontic work.
Orthodontic applications are typically done using two techniques:
Brackets are individually bonded to the teeth using dental adhesive. Once all brackets are placed, the orthodontic wire is threaded through them.
A customized model of the patient’s teeth is prepared. Brackets are attached to this model and later transferred to the patient’s mouth in a single step. The orthodontic wire is then placed.
After active treatment ends, the retention phase begins. Retainers are essential to prevent teeth from shifting back to their original positions.
The ideal time for children to start orthodontic evaluation is when permanent teeth begin to erupt — usually between ages 6 and 7. Jaw and tooth development continues until around age 12, making this period the best time to diagnose structural issues early.
However, adults can receive orthodontic treatment at any age. It is never too late to begin treatment.

Treatment duration varies depending on the severity of the structural issue. On average, orthodontic treatment lasts 6 to 24 months. Following dietary restrictions and maintaining oral hygiene can shorten treatment time and improve results.
During orthodontic treatment, patients generally need a check-up once a month. Your orthodontist will determine the most appropriate schedule.
